Ali Modu Sheriff Reveals Private Moment When Shettima Received VP Nomination From Tinubu
Former Borno State Governor and political heavyweight, Ali Modu Sheriff, has recounted a personal moment he shared with Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, at the time Shettima was chosen as running mate to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2023 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Sheriff disclosed that he was at the burial of a mutual friend named Umar when Shettima informed him of the development.
According to Sheriff, “We were at the burial of our friend, Umar, when Shettima turned to me and said, ‘Sir, I’m going to leave for Abuja. His Excellency the President has offered me the ticket to be his running mate.’ I told him, ‘Congratulations.’”
The former PDP National Chairman further revealed that he was instrumental in bringing Shettima into active politics, leading to his eventual emergence as Governor of Borno State. However, Sheriff clarified that it was not his place to assess Shettima’s performance as Vice President, stressing that President Tinubu made the decision independently.
He explained that Tinubu did not consult anyone before selecting Shettima as his running mate, making it inappropriate for him or anyone else to pass judgment on the Vice President’s performance in office.
The revelation has drawn interest from political analysts and observers, shedding light on the behind-the-scenes dynamics that led to Shettima’s historic nomination and eventual role as Nigeria’s number two citizen.
