In a rare candid moment, former Chief of Staff Professor Ibrahim Gambari has acknowledged that President Muhammadu Buhari operated with a powerful inner circle, popularly known as a cabal, and that every government in Nigeria has one.
In
Gambari made this declaration during an interview with Laolu Akande, the former media aide to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
“They say there’s a cabal or was a cabal, there was,” Gambari admitted. “But every government has a cabal. It is what they call them.”
He continued: “Some call it kitchen cabinet, some may call it think tank. Obasanjo had a group of people... It is the nature of the office of the president that they must have some people in and out of government that they can let their hair down with.”
His statement supports earlier allegations made by Buhari’s own wife, Aisha Buhari, in 2018. She had claimed that a group of unelected individuals had taken control of the government, though her husband publicly denied this.
Gambari’s honesty now appears to validate Aisha’s claims.
Reacting to this, former Buhari minister Solomon Dalung added fuel to the fire: “The cabal surrounding Tinubu is more dangerous and ambitious than those around Buhari.”
