Reactions as President Tinubu was seen bowing to Buhari's remains as he was laid to rest in Daura

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has been laid to rest in the garden of his private residence in Daura, Katsina State.


The 82-year-old former leader, who died in a London hospital on Sunday after a prolonged illness, was buried according to Islamic rites in a spot he cherished during his lifetime.

In the photos which were shared online, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was seen bowing to the remains of the former President as a sign of his last respects.

Buhari’s body, draped in the green-white-green colours of the Nigerian flag, was wheeled to the graveside by military pallbearers.

The burial was accompanied by ceremonial gunshots, honouring the former commander-in-chief.

The grave chosen for the late president was one he often sat beside during his quiet moments, surrounded by the serene garden he loved.

At the site, Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, read Buhari’s citation, highlighting his decades of service to the nation both as a military ruler and as a democratically elected president.

The burial drew an array of dignitaries from within and outside Nigeria.

Others present at the graveside were Vice-President Kashim Shettima, and former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.

Also in attendance was Niger Republic’s Prime Minister, Ali Lamine Zeine, reflecting Buhari's strong diplomatic ties in the West African sub-region.

Earlier in the day, President Tinubu received the remains of the late president at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina.

He arrived from Abuja at 1:42 p.m. and inspected the guard of honour before the Nigerian Air Force aircraft carrying Buhari’s body landed at 1:51 p.m.

From the airport, a solemn motorcade escorted the casket to Daura, where friends, family, political associates, and mourners gathered for the final rites.

Buhari’s death has sparked a wave of mourning across the country, with tributes pouring in from leaders, citizens, and international communities remembering his leadership, integrity, and firm stance on national issues.
