Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is reportedly considering offering former President Goodluck Jonathan an automatic ticket to contest the 2027 presidential election, provided he reactivates his membership and assumes a more prominent political role within the party.
This revelation came from Daniel Woyengikuro, the PDP’s National Financial Secretary, during an exclusive interview in Abuja. Woyengikuro highlighted Jonathan’s lasting influence on both the party and the nation’s political landscape, referring to him as the current national leader of the PDP.
“Is he not the best candidate for us right now? He is more than a former president; he remains the leader of our party. After Obasanjo, the next influential figure is Jonathan,” Woyengikuro stated.
He disclosed that the PDP has been engaging Jonathan and his close allies in consultations, with the aim of reintegrating him into the party’s mainstream leadership. This move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the PDP and address Nigeria’s mounting political and economic crises.
According to Woyengikuro, Nigeria requires decisive leadership to “salvage the country for current and future generations.” He emphasized that in discussions about a Southern Presidency, Jonathan emerges as a standout figure.
When questioned about the possibility of granting Jonathan an automatic ticket, Woyengikuro was unequivocal: “I strongly support it. Quote me anywhere I want him back. At this point, he deserves an automatic ticket because both the party and the nation must be saved.”
He asserted that Jonathan’s comeback would dramatically reshape Nigeria’s political dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections.
Woyengikuro also commended Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, describing him as a “dynamic leader” and another strong southern candidate capable of uniting different generations.
“These are the two individuals I support wholeheartedly: Goodluck Jonathan and Seyi Makinde,” he concluded.
As the PDP gears up for the 2027 general elections, internal consultations are expected to intensify, with Jonathan’s potential candidacy likely to become a central focus in the party’s strategy to reclaim national leadership.
