Manchester United have inserted an unexpected condition into the deal that will see Alejandro Garnacho head to Chelsea this summer.
The 21-year-old Argentine has been at the center of heavy transfer speculation throughout the summer, particularly after manager Rúben Amorim hinted that the winger might need to explore new opportunities following United’s Europa League final defeat to Tottenham back in May. His dissatisfaction with limited game time further fueled rumors of an exit, drawing interest from Napoli and several Saudi Arabian clubs.
Chelsea, however, appear to have won the race for his signature. According to The Athletic on Thursday evening, both clubs have reached an agreement for a £40 million transfer. Garnacho is scheduled to complete his medical on Friday before signing a long-term deal that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2032.
A key element of the transfer is the inclusion of a 10 percent sell-on clause, guaranteeing United a share of any future sale by Chelsea. This also marks the first outgoing player sale for Manchester United in the current transfer window.
Since making his senior debut in 2022, Garnacho has registered 26 goals and 22 assists in 144 appearances. He etched his name in United’s history by scoring in the FA Cup final win against Manchester City in 2024 and playing a decisive role in the Carabao Cup triumph the year before.
Garnacho’s switch makes him Chelsea’s tenth acquisition this summer, joining the likes of Jorrell Hato, Estevao, Jamie Gittens, Joao Pedro, Kendry Paez, Mamadou Sarr, Liam Delap, Jesse Derry, and Dario Essugo in an ambitious recruitment drive.
Meanwhile, Manchester United are still reshaping their squad ahead of the September 1 deadline. Rasmus Højlund is nearing a loan move to Napoli, Jadon Sancho is being linked with AS Roma, and Antony has emerged as a target for Real Betis, who are considering a second loan deal for the Brazilian winger.
