former Super Eagles captain Vincent Enyeama has called on the Nigerian government, football authorities, and the public to support ex-footballers who have ventured into business rather than simply offering them handouts.
The 43-year-old legendary goalkeeper, who owns and manages Vinpys Hotel in Uyo, said that while many retired players invest their earnings wisely, they still need institutional backing to keep their businesses thriving.
“I am not asking them to give me money. I want them to patronise my hotel,” Enyeama said in a recent interview. “Send clients to eat in the restaurant, use the pool, and stay in the rooms. That way, I can keep empowering people.”
Enyeama explained that his hotel employs nearly 100 staff and injects close to ₦50 million into the local economy every month through purchases and operations. However, without consistent patronage, even well-run businesses face challenges.
“If government can empower people like me, it helps everyone,” he stressed. “We are investing heavily in the country, paying taxes, and contributing to economic growth. The only way the government can help is by supporting us through patronage.”
He also urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), state governments, and private individuals to create structures that support ex-athletes transitioning into business and entrepreneurship.
According to Enyeama, this form of support not only sustains retired players but also benefits the wider society by creating jobs and generating revenue.
“Footballers like me gave our best years to the country. Now, we are trying to give back through business. Patronage is better than charity,” he concluded.
