Kwara: Parents To Receive N130,000 For Sending Girl-Child To School

 The Kwara State Government has unveiled a new incentive aimed at reducing the number of out-of-school children, particularly girls, across the state.

Under the World Bank-assisted Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project, parents will receive N130,000 for enrolling and keeping their daughters in school.

Speaking during the second day of the third-quarter inter-ministerial press briefing on Wednesday in Ilorin, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr Lawal Olohungbebe, said over 37,000 girls have already been captured to benefit from the scheme.

“No girl in Kwara State will receive less than N130,000 to go to school. We have paid our counterpart funds, and the disbursement will begin soon,” he said.

The commissioner explained that the initiative forms part of the state government’s broader effort to improve access to quality education and empower young girls to achieve their full potential.

He also announced the cancellation of Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) fees across public schools, describing it as a deliberate step to remove financial barriers that discourage parents from sending their children to school.

According to him, the government has introduced a second-chance education programme targeted at older youths who missed earlier opportunities to complete their education.

Dr Olohungbebe reaffirmed the state’s commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4, which promotes inclusive and equitable quality education for all by 2030.
