Reactions as Tinubu Explains Why He Chose Prof. Amupitan as New INEC Chairman

 President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has shed light on his decision to appoint Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing him as a man of integrity, discipline, and proven record of service

Speaking during the National Council of State meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday, Tinubu said Amupitan’s nomination was based on his apolitical nature and outstanding contributions to the academic and legal fields. The council, which includes serving and former leaders, unanimously endorsed the nomination, commending the professor’s reputation for fairness and professionalism.

According to a statement by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President also emphasized that Amupitan is the first person from Kogi State in the North-Central region to be nominated for the position. Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, praised the nominee’s record, saying it “reflects a deep commitment to justice, knowledge, and national service.”

Following the council’s approval, Tinubu is expected to forward Amupitan’s name to the Senate for screening and confirmation in line with constitutional provisions.

Amupitan, 58, hails from Ayetoro Gbede in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State. He is a professor of law at the University of Jos, where he serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration). He is also the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Joseph Ayo Babalola University in Osun State.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria since 2014, Amupitan has authored several books on company law, corporate governance, and evidence law. His decades-long career in academia and legal administration has earned him wide respect as a scholar of integrity.

When confirmed by the Senate, Professor Joash Amupitan will officially become Nigeria’s 15th INEC Chairman, succeeding Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose ten-year tenure ended on Tuesday.
