We are already in a mess. On our last market day, a bag of maize was ₦20,000 while a mudu went for ₦300

 Salihu Ibrahim, a farmer from Lemu in Gbako Local Government Area of Niger State, has lamented the sharp decline in the prices of farm produce, saying farming is no longer a viable means of livelihood for many rural Nigerians.

Salihu said the price of maize has dropped drastically, with a bag now selling for as low as ₦20,000 in some markets, and ₦22,000 in others. He noted that the situation is not limited to maize alone, as the prices of other crops have also crashed, leaving farmers with heavy losses and little hope of recovery.

Salihu explained that the cost of farming continues to rise, while the returns are shrinking, creating a dangerous imbalance that threatens the sustainability of agriculture in the country. He warned that unless farmers find alternative sources of income, many may be forced to abandon farming altogether

Salihu said,

“We, farmers are already in a mess. On our last market day, a bag of maize was ₦20,000 while a mudu went for ₦300. In some places, a bag of maize is ₦22,000. And not only maize, prices of other farm produce have reduced drastically. We have lost our investments."
