The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, is reportedly out of the country on health grounds, receiving urgent medical care in London, the United Kingdom, following a reported collapse earlier this month.
According to National Assembly sources who spoke to SaharaReporters, Akpabio “collapsed on the 10th of this month and was rushed to London in a private jet provided by billionaire businessman, Aliko Dangote.”
The sudden medical emergency has kept the Senate President away from official duties, most notably the crucial Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) interactive session held on Wednesday.
Akpabio’s absence was visibly felt at the MTEF/FSP flag-off, a key engagement outlining Nigeria’s medium-term fiscal plans. Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi was assigned to represent him at the event.
One source told Sahara Reporters: “He has already missed today’s Medium Term Expenditure Framework presentation today.”
The sources revealed that this is reportedly the “second time he is being rushed to London for treatment,” raising fresh concerns about his long-term health and capacity to continue leading the upper legislative chamber.
His condition is reportedly serious enough to warrant continued overseas medical care, with multiple senators said to have travelled to London to check on him.
One of the sources said, “A number of senators have gone to visit me,” in reference to Akpabio’s hospitalisation abroad.
Perhaps the most significant revelation from the medical briefings received by SaharaReporters is the advice from attending medical experts.
A source said: “Doctors are advising him to step down from the Senate to attend to his health.”
Akpabio’s last known public appearance was on December 9, when the Nigerian Senate approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to send troops to the Republic of Benin.
