Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has attributed his continued stay in office after the six-month emergency rule to the “special favour” of President Bola Tinubu, while reaffirming his commitment to fully funding the Rivers State University (RSU) and supporting its staff and students.
He made the remarks on Saturday during the combined 37th and 38th convocation ceremonies of RSU in Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt.
Fubara acknowledged the setbacks faced by the university, linking many of them to the temporary disruption of democratic governance in the state.
“Like you said, a report was given to us. But you all know what happened in the life of our administration. It is only by the special grace of God and the special favour from Mr President that we are still here presiding over the affairs of Rivers State,” he said.
Responding to concerns raised by the RSU management, the governor assured stakeholders that his administration would resume full responsibilities and tackle the highlighted issues without delay.
He outlined his funding priorities—improved infrastructure, better security, and enhanced welfare for students and staff. Fubara also noted that RSU’s satellite campuses outside Port Harcourt, currently facing operational difficulties, would receive special intervention in 2026.
“We will continue to meet our financial obligations to the university, ensuring improved facilities as well as the security and welfare of staff and students. Education remains the most vital investment for national development,” he added.
Fubara applauded the steady growth of RSU, praising its dedication to delivering quality education and producing graduates aligned with state and national development goals. He urged the institution to deepen research and innovation to help tackle socio-economic challenges in Rivers State and Nigeria.
The governor also celebrated the 13,242 graduates who received first degrees, diplomas, and certificates, acknowledging the roles of parents, guardians, the Governing Council, and staff in their success.
Addressing the new graduates, he encouraged them to embrace opportunities within and beyond the state, particularly in entrepreneurship, problem-solving, and innovation.
“As you step into the future, let integrity, hard work, and honesty guide you. Honour the sacrifices made for your education and live with purpose, kindness, and compassion,” he said.
