The Swedish striker went down injured immediately after scoring the opening goal during their 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday night.

Spurs defender Micky van de Ven caught Isak just after the Liverpool forward struck the ball into the back of the net.

The 26-year-old stayed down and was given treatment on his left leg on the pitch, but was unable to continue for the rest of the match.

The club has not placed a timescale on Isak’s recovery, but the £125m striker had an operation on Monday and will be out for several months.

A statement read: “Alexander Isak today successfully underwent surgery on the injury he sustained on Saturday.

“The Liverpool striker was injured in a challenge in the process of scoring the opening goal against Tottenham Hotspur and had to be substituted.

“After diagnosis, an operation was completed today on an ankle injury that included a fibula fracture.

“Isak’s rehabilitation will now continue at the AXA Training Centre, with no timeframe yet placed on his return.”

The extent of the injury is a devastating blow for Isak, who has endured a difficult start to his Liverpool career, beset by fitness issues.

Isak joined Liverpool in the summer in a sensational £130million transfer from Newcastle United.
