Renowned Islamic scholar Ahmad Gumi has instituted a criminal case against two Facebook users at the Chief Magistrate Court in Kaduna State.
The case, filed on Wednesday and numbered KMD/685/25, lists George Udom and Bello Isiaka as defendants, with Mr. Gumi as the complainant.
The suit concerns alleged criminal conspiracy and defamatory publications made in his name on social media.
Court documents indicate that the defendants allegedly published a Facebook post on 23 December 2025, falsely attributing to Mr. Gumi a threat directed at the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa.
The post suggested that Mr. Gumi had personally threatened a serving public officer responsible for maintaining peace and security in Nigeria, including Kaduna State.
Mr. Gumi, through his lawyer Suleiman Lere, denied authoring or endorsing the statement and described it as deliberately crafted to damage his reputation.
According to Mr. Gumi, the publication has harmed his image as a cleric known for preaching peace, dialogue, and restraint.
He said the false post exposed him to potential reprisals from security agencies and individuals, while also putting his life at risk.
The criminal summons cited multiple provisions of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017, under which the alleged offences attract severe penalties if proven in court.
Gumi said, “Since the federal government has declared them terrorists, I don’t have anything to do with them anymore.”
Mr. Lere said that the case serves as a warning to social media users against spreading false and defamatory content.
He emphasized the need for accountability online, noting that such publications can have serious consequences for the individuals targeted.
