High-level deliberations on who will succeed Babajide Sanwo-Olu as Lagos governor are already underway, insiders say.
Sanwo-Olu is due to leave office in 2027 after completing two four-year terms that began in 2019.
He took over from Akinwunmi Ambode, who was denied a second term, but Ambode has since mended fences with President Bola Tinubu and other party leaders, fueling talk of a possible comeback.
While sources say only two individuals are being seriously considered — with Minister of Education Tunji Alausa named as one — several other names continue to circulate.
Those mentioned include Senator Tokunbo Abiru, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly Mudashiru Obasa, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, and the President’s Private Secretary, Hakeem Muri-Okunola.
However, insiders insist that beyond the public speculation, party elders — regarded as the key decision-makers — are already deliberating, in line with the established process that has shaped leadership succession in Lagos since Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s rise.
