The highly anticipated defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been postponed.
A close ally of the governor told Daily Post that the earlier date set for the official defection, Monday, January 5, 2026, has been rescheduled to Monday, January 12, 2026.
Reports initially indicated that Governor Yusuf was ready to formally join the APC on January 5. However, a source close to the governor, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that Yusuf requested additional time during a meeting with Vice President, Kashim Shettima, in Abuja on Friday.
According to the source, the governor wants to engage some remaining state legislators and key stakeholders who have not yet fully aligned with the proposed political move before finalising the defection.
Kano, an ancient city regarded as a significant hub of northern Nigerian politics, has in recent days been abuzz with reports of Yusuf’s planned decampment from the NNPP to the APC.
In other news, the National Publicity Secretary of the NNPP, Ladipo Johnson, has addressed rumours of internal defections from the party’s Kwankwasiyya movement.
NNPP is currently grappling with an internal crisis, centred on its stronghold of Kano State, where reports suggest Governor Abba Yusuf may defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in early January 2026.
However, during an interview on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’, Johnson said Yusuf has not mentioned his defection to the National Working Committee or the National Executive Committee.
The NNPP chieftain further dismissed speculation that the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has agreed to the Kano people and Governor Yusuf moving to the APC.
