Oriyomi Hamzat, chief executive officer of Agidigbo FM, a popular radio station in Ibadan, Oyo State, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election on the platform of the Accord Party, describing the decision as one guided by a “divine calling.”
The announcement places the media executive among early entrants positioning themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle in the state.
The declaration was made on Saturday during a rally held at the Liberty Stadium in Ibadan, the state capital, where supporters and party members gathered to witness the formal unveiling of his ambition, the event marked Hamzat’s first public step into partisan politics after years of prominence in the media sector, particularly in radio broadcasting within Oyo State.
During his address at the rally, Hamzat explained that his decision to seek the governorship followed personal reflection and consultation, noting that politics was not originally part of his career plan.
He stated that the move was driven by conviction rather than material considerations or established political structures. “I don’t have money or political connections, and I don’t have the backing of the government of the day. I have come with God, and that is all I need.”
Hamzat further clarified his political stance ahead of the coming election cycle, stressing that he would not serve as a mobiliser or supporter for any other aspirant.
According to him, his focus is solely on his own candidacy under the Accord Party, a position he said would remain unchanged as preparations for party activities and engagements continue in the coming months.
The media entrepreneur is widely known in Ibadan and surrounding areas for his leadership at Agidigbo FM, a radio station with a significant audience base in Oyo State, his influence in the media space has often placed him at the centre of public discourse, though he has largely remained outside formal political participation until this declaration.
Party officials present at the rally welcomed Hamzat’s entry into the race, describing it as an opportunity to strengthen the Accord Party’s visibility ahead of the 2027 polls, supporters at the venue displayed party colours and banners, while organisers maintained that the gathering was peaceful and focused on introducing the aspirant’s vision to the public.
As the political landscape in Oyo State gradually takes shape ahead of 2027, Hamzat’s declaration adds to the list of emerging governorship hopefuls, his campaign activities are expected to continue within party structures, with further engagements anticipated across the state as the election season approaches.
