Manchester United have confirmed that Ruben Amorim is no longer head coach, bringing an end to his 14-month spell at Old Trafford as per reports from Evening Standard.
The decision was announced on Monday, a day after the club were held to a 1–1 draw by Leeds.
Amorim, who arrived in November 2024 amid high expectations, departs with United sitting sixth in the Premier League after 20 matches.
While the league position keeps the club in touch with European places, the hierarchy have concluded that a change is necessary to maximise their chances during the remainder of the season.
In a club statement, United confirmed: “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.”
The statement also highlighted one of the brighter moments of his tenure, pointing that he “led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.”
Despite that continental run, domestic consistency proved elusive.
United struggled to build momentum in the league, with performances fluctuating and pressure mounting in recent weeks.
Amorim himself hinted at internal challenges after the Leeds draw, suggesting there were unresolved issues behind the scenes.
The club described the decision as difficult but strategic, explaining that with the team currently sixth, leadership felt it was “the right time to make a change” in order to push for the strongest possible finish.
United also expressed gratitude for Amorim’s efforts and wished him success in his next role.
Attention now turns to the immediate future, with Darren Fletcher set to step into the dugout on an interim basis.
Fletcher will take charge for Wednesday’s fixture against Burnley.
