Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has opened up on why current protests in Nigeria often struggle to gain ground. Speaking in a fresh interview, the former presidential candidate explained that the presence of former activists in President Tinubu’s cabinet makes it difficult for the masses to use old tactics.
Sowore pointed out that people like the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, understand the "language" of the streets. Because they were once on the side of the people, they now give the government "dangerous knowledge" on how to wear out protesters. "They know that if they wait you out for three hours, everyone will go home," he said.
The activist also touched on the legal troubles facing former officials like Nasir El-Rufai and Abubakar Malami. He noted that the government finds it easy to move them "from cell to cell" because these men once used the same system against others.
Many Nigerians reacting to the news expressed a mix of shock and sadness, feeling that those who once fought for them are now the ones blocking their voices. Sowore warned that those who switch from "left to right" are often the most difficult to deal with in power.
