The Presidency has confirmed that Kayode Egbetokun has resigned from his position as Inspector-General of Police.
He stated that Egbetokun decided to leave office because of family matters that need his full attention.
“The IGP resigned in a letter today, citing family issues which require his undivided attention”,Onanuga told Punch.
However, reports reveal that this development followed a private meeting between Egbetokun and President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday evening.
According to insiders, the police chief was asked to step aside during the meeting.
He is expected to be succeeded by Tunji Disu, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Alagbon, Lagos.
Egbetokun was appointed Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023.
Before taking the top job, he served as Deputy Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department.
He took over from Usman Alkali Baba, whose tenure ended in September 2023 after receiving an extension from former President Muhammadu Buhari.
In other news, at least 29 senior police officers, including Deputy Inspectors-General of Police and Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, are set to be removed from office following the sack of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Sources within the Nigeria Police Force and the Police Service Commission disclosed to Sahara Reporters on Tuesday that the planned shake-up is part of a wider restructuring of the police leadership.
