Nigeria’s higher education landscape has taken a fresh turn following the release of the Times Higher Education Nigeria University Rankings 2026, with new leaders emerging and long-standing institutions shifting positions.
The latest ranking, published in October 2025, evaluates universities across key performance areas such as teaching quality, research strength, industry income, and global outlook. Widely regarded as one of the most credible global ranking systems, THE’s methodology is trusted by students, academics, and policymakers worldwide.
University of Ibadan, UNILAG Emerge Joint Best in Nigeria
In a major highlight, the University of Ibadanand the University of Lagos have been ranked joint number one universities in Nigeria for 2026.
Both institutions are placed within the 801–1000 global band, with strong performances particularly in research quality and international outlook. Their emergence at the top marks a significant shift, as they displace Covenant University, which previously held the number one position.
Top Performers and Rising Institutions
The rankings reveal a competitive mix of federal, state, and private universities making strides in global visibility.
Institutions ranked just below the top spot include:
- Bayero University
- Covenant University
- Landmark University
These universities fall within the 1001–1200 global category and have shown consistent progress, particularly in research output and industry collaboration.
Further down the list, universities such as Ahmadu Bello University, University of Ilorin, and University of Nigeria Nsukka continue to maintain relevance, especially in academic teaching and knowledge dissemination.
Nigeria’s Growing Presence in Global Rankings
One of the standout insights from the 2026 ranking is Nigeria’s increasing footprint in global academia.
A total of 24 Nigerian universities made the list this year—an improvement from the previous ranking, signalling steady growth in the country’s education sector.
Federal institutions continue to dominate the rankings, but private universities are also gaining ground, particularly in areas such as industry partnerships and innovation.
Research Quality Drives Performance
A closer look at the data shows that research quality remains a major differentiator among Nigerian universities.
For instance, Landmark University and Ahmadu Bello University recorded strong scores in research quality, highlighting their contributions to knowledge creation and academic influence.
Similarly, University of Ilorin posted impressive results in this category, reinforcing its reputation as a consistent academic performer.
Private vs Public Universities: Who Leads?
While federal universities still dominate in terms of overall presence, private institutions are making significant inroads.
Covenant University, once ranked number one, remains a top contender due to its strong industry income and structured academic environment.
Other private institutions like Babcock University also feature on the list, though with lower overall scores compared to top-ranked universities.
