Veteran journalist and ADC Chieftain, Dele Momodu, has indicated that a significant shift is occurring within Nigeria's political landscape, triggered by recent private events involving former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. In a statement released via his official X handle on Sunday, March 29, 2026, Momodu suggested that a mourning period has inadvertently become a catalyst for political realignment.
Momodu observed that the recent passing of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai's mother has prompted a "sudden reconfiguration" among the country's political class. He noted that the event has drawn together leaders from various factions, many of whom were previously perceived as rivals or estranged.
"Barely a week ago, no one would have expected the sudden reconfiguration that has practically descended upon our political gladiators in the last couple of days," Momodu stated. "Thanks to the passage of MALLAM NASIR EL RUFAI'S Mum, many of our politicians now remember that, once upon a time, they were friends, or even members of the same party,” he added.
The journalist described the scene at the former governor’s residence as a gathering of "leaders of different persuasions and colorations," suggesting that the traditional boundaries of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition parties are becoming blurred. Momodu argued that this development has significantly shifted the public’s attention away from the proceedings of the APC National Convention.
He said, "Worse enough, this news has resoundingly obliterated the soundbites from the APC National Convention. What a collateral damage!!"
Momodu further contended that the current political climate, which he characterized as one of "intolerance" or "deliberate annihilation" of opposition parties by the Tinubu administration, has unintentionally created a unifying force for rival politicians. He suggested that these pressures have "forced, and unified the opposition to flock together."
Concluding his assessment, Momodu warned that these developments might be the precursor to more significant political movements in the near future: "I've told many people that Nigeria has the uncanny knack of pulling stunts when you least expect.
