Popular media personality Morayo Afolabi Brown has opened up about her unexpected journey into television, revealing that she never planned to become a show host.
she made this known while speaking at the Refire Conference, where she spoke about her early struggles, career setbacks, and eventual rise in broadcasting.
Morayo explained that her original plan was to work behind the scenes, not in front of the camera.
She said she had doubts about her ability to speak fluently and even struggled with stammering.
According to her, the idea at the time was to hire someone else to anchor the show, and she brought in Joy Isi Bewaji, who was then focused on writing and later became widely known for her work.
However, things took a sudden turn just before the show was set to go live. The appointed host stepped away to focus on writing, leaving the production team in a difficult position. With little time to prepare, Morayo was pushed into hosting the programme herself, despite her fears and lack of confidence.
She said that was how her journey as a television host began, and over time, the show gained attention and popularity.
Years later, she faced another challenge when Television Continental (TVC) removed her from her position. The decision left her frustrated, but she did not walk away quietly. She pushed back and defended her work, insisting on her contributions to the platform’s growth.
After days of uncertainty, she was brought back, although in a lower role. Despite the setback, she continued working on her show and remained committed to her craft.
In 2019, Morayo stepped down from her role at TVC but continued to work with the station as a contract staff, still handling her programme. By 2023, she secured a leadership role as a Managing Director, which she initially saw as a breakthrough moment in her career. However, she said the position did not give her the sense of fulfillment she expected.
Her turning point came when she developed a new television concept and pitched it to a potential partner, who provided 100 million naira in funding through her company. This moment made her reflect on her journey and pushed her to take a bold step.
She eventually decided to leave her position and focus on building something of her own. That decision led to the birth of her own show, The Morayo Show.
She said: “A few years later, TVC sacked me, I was frustrated and had to fight for my job. Five days later, they rehired me, but this time I was demoted. In 2019, I resigned, but I was still doing my show as a contract staff. When I became an MD in 2023, I thought I had finally broken through, but I still didn’t feel fulfilled.
“I wrote a TV show concept and someone gave me 100 million naira. I had to ask myself if I could do this for myself, and I knew it was time to leave. I decided to take the bull by the horn and start again. Till today, every day is a new day, and we keep asking how to make it better. God has already deposited something in you and brings things together to push it out.”
