The Independent National Electoral Commission has formally recognised a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party leadership backed by Nyesom Wike, in a development that marks a major turn in the party’s internal crisis.
INEC updated its official records to reflect a new National Working Committee (NWC), listing Abdulrahman Mohammed as the party’s National Chairman following a convention held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
The recognition comes amid a deepening split within the PDP, with a rival faction led by Kabiru Turaki challenging the legitimacy of the convention in court. Despite the legal dispute, the convention went ahead, producing a full list of national officers.
Addressing supporters, Wike said the party had emerged stronger after months of internal conflict. “We have overcome a protracted leadership crisis that once threatened the survival of this party,” he said.
He added that loyal members had resisted divisive forces and restored internal control. “The PDP has been returned to its rightful owners, the people.” Wike also praised grassroots supporters for sustaining the party through the crisis. “Despite the infidelity of opportunistic elite, the rank-and-file remained steadfast,” he said.
Political observers say the move by INEC could have far-reaching implications for the PDP’s structure and future electoral strategy, as the battle for control of the party continues.
