The political situation in Kano State has entered a tense phase following the resignation of Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo. Although his exit was officially described as a move made in the interest of governance stability, it has triggered a fresh power struggle over who will replace him, placing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf under increasing political pressure.
Several influential figures have emerged as contenders. One of the frontrunners is Ismaila Jibril Falgore, the current Speaker of the State House of Assembly, who is believed to have the governor’s backing due to his loyalty, especially during Yusuf’s political transition. On the other hand, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is pushing for Murtala Sule Garo, its 2023 deputy governorship candidate, arguing that he deserves compensation for his past role and lack of federal appointment. Adding to the competition is Alhassan Rirum, a former Speaker and current House of Representatives member, who reportedly enjoys strong support from Kano South stakeholders and National Assembly members. This has further complicated the selection process.
Meanwhile, internal divisions within the APC—particularly between loyalists of Abdullahi Ganduje and those aligned with Yusuf—are deepening the crisis. These factions disagree sharply on who should emerge as deputy governor. Overall, while Gwarzo’s resignation was framed as a strategic decision for effective governance, it has instead exposed underlying political rivalries, leaving the state in a delicate balancing act as leaders negotiate power, loyalty, and regional interests.
