the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has reiterated the National Assembly’s backing for the proposed creation of Anioma State, describing the move as a major step toward equitable development.
Akpabio spoke at the South-South zonal congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held in Asaba, where he assured party members that the administration of President Bola Tinubu is committed to seeing the proposal through.
Under the plan, Asaba is expected to serve as the capital of the proposed Anioma State, while Warri would emerge as the capital of a restructured Delta State.
Highlighting Warri’s advantage, Akpabio pointed to its existing infrastructure, including an airport, seaport, oil industry presence, and administrative facilities, which position it as a natural choice for a state capital.
He described the demand for Anioma State as a legitimate and long-standing aspiration of the people, driven by the need for fairness, improved governance, and balanced regional development.
The initiative, led by Ned Nwoko, has continued to gather momentum within the Senate, with Akpabio revealing that it remains one of the key legislative priorities of the current Assembly.
According to him, the proposed restructuring would not only split Delta State into two functional entities but also promote decentralisation and unlock new economic opportunities.
“This initiative will usher in development and shared prosperity,” Akpabio said, reaffirming the Senate’s commitment to the project.
He further urged political leaders and stakeholders in the South-South to close ranks and support the federal government’s agenda, stressing that unity is essential for sustainable growth.
