A former presidential candidate, Dele Momodu, has alleged that President Bola Tinubu is opposed to the existence of a strong opposition in Nigeria’s political system.
Momodu made the claim on Sunday while speaking during an interview on Sunday Politics, a programme on Channels Television.
The publisher and politician said democracy thrives on strong opposition, stressing that the country should not operate a system where the ruling party faces no real challenge.
According to him, the current political environment suggests that Tinubu would prefer to run without meaningful opposition.
“There must be opposition politics. There must be opposition candidates but Tinubu wants to contest against himself and it doesn’t make sense to me,” Momodu said.
Momodu also commented on the political influence and financial resources available to the president, particularly referencing Tinubu’s political base in Lagos State.
“You can imagine how much Tinubu can generate from Lagos State alone not to talk of national, and when you have an absolute ruler everything is available to him,” he said.
The former presidential aspirant said his alignment with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar reflects a shared commitment to strengthening opposition politics in Nigeria.
“So if I’m with Atiku it shows you it is people who have genuine interest of the country,” he said.
Momodu further argued that the emergence of Tinubu as president was largely influenced by the support of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“Look Buhari handed over to Tinubu, but for Buhari it would have been impossible for Tinubu to be president today,” he said.
He also criticised what he described as attempts to present misleading narratives about government performance.
“You can see all these rabble-rousing they are doing up and down, giving you fake statistics up and down,” he added.
