The national leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has been urged to consider the incumbent Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State for an appointive position rather than an elective position after the expiration of his two terms in office.
In a statement made during a radio discussion programme in Ilorin, a chieftain of the APC in the state, Hon. Toyin Olosasa, said that consideration of an elective position for the governor in the 2027 general polls could cause disharmony among members of the party in the state.
He suggested that while the governor could be considered for an appointive position at the national level after his tenure, fielding him for an election in the state would be “politically risky.”
The APC chieftain also referenced the last local government elections, alleging that the party’s performance in Ilorin West did not reflect its actual support base.
Meanwhile, pressure by political leaders and stakeholders in the Kwara Central District had continued to mount on Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to represent the senatorial district in the Senate come the 2027 general elections.
The stakeholders, comprising executive chairmen, elected councillors, political appointees and community leaders from the four local government areas of the district, said the call reflects the collective wish of the people for the governor to continue his service to the state at the federal level.
According to the group’s spokesperson and Asa LG chairman, Sheu Amosa, the call is rooted in the political transformation that began ahead of the 2019 general elections with the emergence of the O To Ge movement, which mobilised citizens across the state to demand a new direction in governance.
They noted that the success of the movement led to the election of Abdulrazaq as governor, ending years of political dominance associated with Bukola Saraki and ushering in a new phase of development in the state.
Highlighting the governor’s achievements, the stakeholders said his administration has recorded significant progress in key sectors including education, healthcare, infrastructure and commerce.
In the education sector, they cited the construction of new classrooms across the state, the renovation of dilapidated school buildings and the provision of furniture to improve the learning environment for students.
They also commended the government’s efforts in strengthening the health sector through the construction of basic healthcare centres, the provision of modern medical equipment in hospitals and the recruitment of medical personnel to enhance healthcare delivery.
On infrastructure, the leaders pointed to the construction of roads and overhead bridges, which they said have improved connectivity between rural communities and urban markets, thereby facilitating economic activities across the state.
They further highlighted major development projects such as the Innovation Hub, Sugar House, the International Conference Centre and the renovation of Kwara Hotels, describing them as initiatives aimed at boosting investment and tourism in the state.
The stakeholders also praised the administration for promoting commerce, improving electricity supply through the provision of transformers and the connection of communities to the national grid, as well as ensuring the regular payment of workers’ salaries and staff promotions.
In addition, they commended the governor for strengthening grassroots governance across the 16 local government areas in the state.
Leaders from Asa Local Government Area, Ilorin East Local Government Area, Ilorin South Local Government Area and Ilorin West Local Government Area jointly appealed to the governor to heed what they described as the “clarion call of the people” by contesting for the senate seat representing the district.
They expressed confidence that AbdulRazaq’s leadership and experience would further drive development in Kwara Central and contribute positively to national legislation.
The stakeholders also reaffirmed their support for continued unity and progress in the state and the country.
