Following the Tuesday deadline for political appointees to resign their current position to pursue their political ambition, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has denied the resignation rumour, which amounts to jettisoning his gubernatorial ambition.
Adelabu was one of the leading governorship aspirants under the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the recent past, but his failure to resign by yesterday’s deadline of President Bola Tinubu’s order that ministers and appointees seeking elective positions should resign by 31st March, 2026, was a pointer to abandonment of his gubernatorial ambition.
It could be recalled that a few weeks ago, at an event, Adelabu declared his intention to contest for the governorship position in 2027, citing his previous attempts in 2019 and 2023, and believes it’s his turn to lead the state.
According to him at the event, “I have been on this journey for a while now. I believe it’s not the day you start politics that you begin to reap the benefits. I have now paid my dues. It’s Adelabu time, it is my time”.
Recently, there was a report suggesting that the APC might be considering Senator representing Oyo South, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, and member of the House of Representatives representing Ido/Ibarapa East, Hon Remi Oseni, for the Oyo governorship ticket, but the party in the state has dismissed the insinuation, saying the party is yet to discuss anything in that regard.
However, Adelabu’s aide dismissed these claims, stating the minister remains the strongest and most qualified candidate.
It could be recalled that there were reports suggesting Adelabu had resigned to pursue his Oyo governorship ambition through a letter dated 26th March, 2026, which was tagged as a fake resignation letter by the Special Adviser on Strategic Communication and Media Relations to the Minister of Power, Bolaji Tunji.
Tunji noted that Adelabu is still in the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the information as untrue. “It is not true. The story is untrue.”
Also, sources close to the Ministry of Power who spoke under the condition of anonymity said Adelabu is still in office as Power Minister, suggesting he might not resign at all.
