The Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, and his predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje, have reportedly held a closed-door meeting in Abuja to discuss the growing political tensions in the state.
Sources familiar with the development told Daily Nigerian that the meeting focused on recent defections within the party, the lingering emirship dispute, and the vacant deputy governorship position.
The discussions came amid heightened political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Earlier on Tuesday, Ganduje reportedly met with President Bola Tinubu to brief him on recent political developments in Kano State, particularly following the defection of the former All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Nasiru Gawuna, and concerns about further defections.
Sources said Ganduje expressed dissatisfaction with what he described as a lack of consultation by the presidency on party matters in Kano, which he blamed for the growing crisis within the party structure.
During the meeting, Tinubu was said to have proposed a ministerial appointment for Gawuna, but Ganduje reportedly noted that the move came too late as the former deputy governor had already defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The long-running Kano emirship dispute was also reportedly discussed during the consultations.
Sources said Ganduje backed the claim of Emir Aminu Bayero to the throne and urged that the matter be resolved quickly to prevent it from affecting political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections.
The emirship crisis currently involves rival claims by Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and Emir Aminu Bayero, a dispute that has continued to shape Kano’s political landscape.
The issue of the vacant deputy governorship position also featured prominently in the discussions.
According to sources, Ganduje reiterated his position that Murtala Garo should be considered for the role as part of efforts to maintain party unity and stability.
Following the discussions with Ganduje, the president was said to have directed that both Yusuf and Ganduje meet to find common ground on the issues affecting the state.
Sources familiar with the meeting told Daily Nigerian that Governor Yusuf arrived at Ganduje’s residence on Haile Selassie Street in Asokoro, Abuja, at about 1 a.m. on Wednesday.
The governor reportedly arrived alongside his son, Al-Amin Yusuf, and his political strategist, Mohammed Jamu.
They were received by Ganduje’s protocol officer, Adamu Unguwar Gini, and a former presidential aide, Nasiru Ja’oji.
A federal lawmaker representing Bichi Constituency, Abubakar Bichi, later joined the meeting.
Insiders said the discussions centred on stemming the wave of defections affecting the party in Kano and finding a lasting solution to the emirship dispute.
Ganduje was said to have advised the governor to appoint Murtala Garo as deputy governor, arguing that the move could stabilise the party, prevent further defections and strengthen its chances ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, Governor Yusuf reportedly asked for time to carry out wider consultations before making a decision.
