FIFA president Gianni Infantino has reportedly sent a letter to the Argentine Football Association following the national team's defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
According to a report by the Daily Mail, Infantino wrote to the President of the Argentine Football Association after Argentina finished as runners-up in the tournament.
Argentina suffered a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the final at the New York New Jersey Stadium, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal in extra time to hand La Roja the World Cup trophy.
Despite the disappointment of losing the final, Infantino reportedly praised Argentina for their performance throughout the tournament and congratulated the team on securing the silver medal.
He wrote: “Dear Mr. President, Yesterday, Sunday, July 19, 2026, at the magnificent New York New Jersey Stadium, Argentina won the silver medal of the FIFA World Cup 2026, after an exciting final against Spain. I would like to reiterate my most sincere congratulations for this important new result for Argentine soccer."
Infantino also reportedly praised Argentina's contribution to the tournament, saying the Albiceleste's impressive campaign helped make the competition an exceptional event that captivated football fans around the world.
The FIFA president extended his congratulations to the players and head coach Lionel Scaloni, as well as the coaching and medical staff who supported the team throughout the competition.
He also acknowledged the Argentina supporters, who followed the national team during its journey to the final.
Infantino reportedly stressed that success at the highest level is built on hard work, professionalism and attention to detail, while also highlighting the importance of passion, commitment and love for the game.
The FIFA chief further suggested that Argentina's performance could serve as a foundation for future success, expressing his belief that the national team and Argentine football have a promising future ahead.
Argentina had been among the leading teams at the 2026 World Cup and ultimately reached the final after defeating England in the semi-finals. However, they were unable to retain the trophy after Spain edged them in extra time.
The defeat ended Argentina's hopes of adding another World Cup title to their impressive recent international record. Nevertheless, reaching the final represented another strong showing from a team that has remained among the world's elite in recent years.
