Erling Haaland once again demonstrated his growing status in world football after inspiring Norway to a shock victory over the Brazil national football team and a place in the World Cup quarter-finals.
The Manchester City forward produced a clinical performance, scoring twice to continue his impressive tournament form. His tally of seven goals now puts him level with Lionel Messi and Kylian MbappĂ© as the competition’s top scorers.
Haaland gave Norway the lead with a towering header after outjumping his defender, before later confirming the victory with an accurate long-range finish.
The win knocked out one of the favourites to win the tournament and further strengthened Norway’s reputation as serious contenders.
Away from the tournament, speculation surrounding Haaland’s future has continued to attract attention. His father, Alf-Inge Haaland, admitted that although the striker is happy at Manchester City, a future transfer cannot be ruled out.
Speaking to DAZN, he stated: “He’s very happy at Manchester City and has a long contract, but in football you never know. Anyone would want to play for Real Madrid.”
Rumours linking Haaland with Real Madrid have remained strong, especially after presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme recently claimed he would try to bring the Norwegian striker to the Spanish club.
At present, however, there are no strong signs that a transfer is close, especially since Haaland signed a contract extension in 2025.
Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti reacted to the defeat with disappointment but insisted the team must move forward positively.
“We are all extremely sad,” he said. “But this is not the end, it is the beginning of a new cycle. We must improve and find new ideas.”
Haaland is also preparing for a new chapter at club level, with Enzo Maresca set to begin his tenure as Manchester City manager following Pep Guardiola’s departure.
Despite ongoing transfer speculation, Haaland’s immediate attention remains on the World Cup, where he continues to play a key role in Norway’s impressive journey.
Although questions remain about where his future may eventually lie, his influence on football’s biggest stage is currently undeniable.
