A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kola Ologbondiyan, has criticized the Federal Government's implementation of the fuel subsidy removal policy, arguing that it has placed a heavy economic burden on Nigerians without providing sufficient measures to cushion its effects.
Speaking during an interview aired on Channels Television and shared on the station's official YouTube channel on Monday, July 6, 2026, Ologbondiyan said although he supports the removal of fuel subsidy in principle, the policy should have been implemented gradually to reduce its impact on citizens.
According to him, a phased approach would have allowed Nigerians, businesses, and state governments enough time to adjust to the economic changes brought about by the reform.
Ologbondiyan observed that while state governments have benefited from increased revenue following the subsidy removal, many Nigerians continue to struggle with the rising cost of living. He questioned the suggestion that citizens should rely on state governors for relief, arguing that most people have little or no direct access to their governors.
Expressing his dissatisfaction with the situation, he said, "You can't take all our money and give it to the governors, then expect us to go back to them for help
He maintained that governments at all levels must prioritize the welfare of citizens and called for greater accountability in the management of public funds, especially at a time when many Nigerians are facing severe economic challenges.
