Former Vice-President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has raised concerns over a suspicious credit into one of his private bank accounts.
The former vice-president said an unknown person paid money into the account with the narration “Contribution Electioneering Campaign”, despite the fact that neither he nor his campaign team solicited or authorized the payment.
Atiku’s camp described the development as a serious concern because the account is a strictly private account whose details are not in the public domain.
The incident has therefore raised questions about how unknown persons obtained his confidential banking information.
The former vice-president has consequently put security agencies on notice over the development, amid concerns about the possible misuse of private financial information ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to a statement issued by Phrank Shaibu, Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, the payment was not known to Atiku, his campaign organisation or his aides before it was made.
Atiku also warned that the incident could have wider implications for Nigerians if private banking information can be accessed and used without the knowledge or authorisation of account holders.
“If the private banking information of a former Vice President and a leading presidential candidate can be accessed and deployed for reasons yet unknown, then no Nigerian’s financial privacy is safe,” he said.
