Social media has been flooded this week with the Ochacho trend, popularly referred to as the “Ochacho Update,” following billionaire industrialist Ochacho’s promise to spend $1 million promoting his 13-year-old son, Ice King’s new EP.
The billionaire made the revelation during a FaceTime conversation with popular streamer, Peller, where he asked the streamer to gather his bloggers and influencers to promote his son’s music, stressing that money was not a problem.
Since the announcement, the internet has been buzzing with the “Ochacho Update,” as influencers and content creators have joined the trend by creating different contents around the young artiste and his music.
Many have also jumped on Ice King’s released single, “Oh Papa,” a song dedicated to his father. Even Nigerian footballer, Boniface, has joined the growing trend.
However, the billionaire’s decision to use his wealth to promote his 13-year-old son has also generated criticism online.
Social media Influencer, Gheghe, questioned how children from less privileged backgrounds could compete fairly in the music industry with children of wealthy personalities such as Wizkid’s son, Champs, and Ochacho’s son, Ice King, who have access to their fathers’ financial resources and influence.
Meanwhile, several influencers and content creators appear to be taking advantage of the trend, with some hoping to benefit from the $1 million promotional budget.
An elderly TikTok creator known as “Purewhitebola,” who had reportedly been using Ice King’s song even before Ochacho announced the promotional money, has already been gifted N2 million.
The massive online promotion also appears to be producing results for the young artiste.
Ice King Ochacho recently made his first appearance on the Nigerian Spotify Top Songs Chart, with his song, “No Competition,” debuting at number 190 with over 30,000 streams.
The development has further fuelled conversations about Peller’s influence and his promise to make the billionaire’s son popular
