Oyo State Governor and Allied Peoples Movement (APM) presidential candidate, Seyi Makinde, has questioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for a second term, citing his earlier promise regarding the nation's electricity supply.
Makinde made the comment on Monday while responding to criticism over the use of diesel-powered generators to illuminate selected streetlights across Oyo State.
Speaking at the Boye Nation/JAF Movement Mega Concert in Ibadan, the governor argued that critics should focus their attention on the wider electricity challenges affecting the entire country rather than localized interventions.
Recalling Tinubu’s 2023 presidential campaign, Makinde noted that the president promised to provide constant electricity and explicitly urged Nigerians not to vote for him for a second term if he failed to deliver within his first four years.
“’President Tinubu deserves no second term because he once said that if electricity is not fixed, Nigerians should not vote for him’” Makinde stated.
Makinde’s remarks came after Oyo State APC governorship candidate, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, criticized the reliance on diesel generators for state streetlights.
The governor maintained that if electricity from the national grid were reliable, state governments would not need to spend public funds on diesel to power essential public lighting.
Makinde’s comments have intensified the ongoing political debate over Tinubu’s performance in the power sector ahead of the 2027 presidential election. However, the Presidency has previously disputed interpretations that Tinubu promised Nigerians he would not seek a second term if he failed to fix electricity.
