A lady has sparked conversations online after accusing some African mothers of enabling irresponsible men by allowing them to abandon their parental responsibilities and placing the burden of raising children on their first daughters.
In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the lady criticised the unequal distribution of domestic responsibilities in some African households, arguing that mothers often accept situations in which fathers contribute little beyond providing money.
She said, “African mothers are the biggest enablers and the mass producers of useless men into the African society.”
According to her, some men deliberately distance themselves from their roles as fathers, leaving their wives to handle virtually everything in the home.
She explained that the situation often leads to first daughters taking up responsibilities that should ordinarily be shared by both parents.
“A lot of men in African households who are the husbands absorb themselves from the position of a second parent or even a contributing person in the household apart from bringing a cheque,” she said.
The lady noted that first daughters are frequently expected to cook, clean, wash clothes, look after their younger siblings and prepare them for school.
She described the practice as parentification, explaining that children are sometimes forced to assume adult responsibilities while growing up.
“We see this first daughter being turned into a full-blown adult, which is something that is called parentification,” she added.
She further criticised mothers who allow such arrangements to continue, arguing that they indirectly encourage boys to grow up believing that domestic and childcare responsibilities are exclusively for women.
According to her, boys raised in such environments may eventually expect their wives to accept the same arrangement in their marriages.
She warned that the pattern could continue across generations, with men expecting their wives to shoulder parental responsibilities while they limit their contributions to financial provision.
