David Adeleke, the Nigerian singer popularly known as Davido, has said he defeated 17 governors despite their power, and that he cannot be forced to adopt a presidential candidate for 2027.
According to a report by Daily Post on Friday, October 16, 2026, while speaking in an interview with News Central TV, he publicly made his position known days after the Osun State governorship election results were announced.
The singer explained that his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, declared support for President Bola Tinubu immediately after winning the election, but that he was under no obligation to follow that political choice himself.
“I defeated 17 governors with all their power, with all their immunity, escort commanders, DSS, with all their billions. I defeated them with just a phone. For now, I feel like I did what I had to do for the Osun people and my family. You can’t force me to have a presidential candidate. My uncle might have his personal reasons for the gain of the state,” he said.
He recalled that he previously backed former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar when both men were members of the Peoples Democratic Party, and also campaigned in 2015, after the APC merger, because his late uncle was part of the party.
He said that for now, he feels he has done what he had to do for the Osun people and his family, and that his uncle may have his own personal reasons for the gain of the state.
In his concluding remarks, Davido said he cannot be forced to pick a presidential candidate, stressing that he had defeated 17 governors with nothing but a phone despite their power, immunity, escort commanders, DSS and all their billions.
