Chinedu Igbo, the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Delta State, has revealed how security operatives uncovered several underground tunnels inside a suspected drug hideout in Asaba.
According to a report by Channels Television, the NSCDC received intelligence alleging that illegal drug activities were taking place in an unfinished building in the state capital. Acting on the information, Igbo deployed officers to the location to investigate the allegations.
However, gaining access to the property proved difficult because the building had three heavily reinforced entrances. The commandant explained that his team spent approximately three days trying to penetrate the structure before finally gaining entry with the aid of a blowtorch.
What the officers discovered inside reportedly went beyond their initial expectations. According to Igbo, the building contained multiple underground tunnels and exit routes that could potentially allow occupants to escape whenever security personnel approached.
The commandant expressed concern that the property might have been used for other criminal activities beyond the alleged drug trade. He suggested that the hidden passageways raised suspicions about the possible use of the location for kidnapping and illegal organ harvesting, although these activities were not established as confirmed facts in the account.
Recounting the operation, Igbo explained that the team had to work for three days to breach the building. He added that the numerous escape routes discovered inside suggested that anyone occupying the property could have used the underground passages to flee when they detected the presence of security operatives.
The discovery has raised concerns about the possible use of concealed structures as hideouts for criminal activities and the challenges security agencies may face when investigating such locations.
