Garba Shehu finally spills shocking truth about Buhari's health
Former presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu has confessed that the viral story about rats invading the Presidential Villa in 2017 was fabricated to distract Nigerians from then-President Muhammadu Buhari’s deteriorating health.
In his new book “According to the President: Lessons from a Presidential Spokesperson’s Experience”, launched on Tuesday in Abuja, Shehu revealed that the widely circulated claim about rodents damaging Buhari’s office was never true.
He admitted it was a strategic move to divert public discourse from intense speculation about Buhari’s health and leadership capability following a prolonged medical absence in the UK.
At the time, suspicions were rife that Buhari had been replaced with a lookalike clone from Sudan—a theory popularised by Biafra agitator Nnamdi Kanu. Matters escalated when the presidency announced that Buhari, though back in Nigeria, would be working from home.
Shehu wrote that after overhearing casual remarks about possible cable damage from rats, he seized the opportunity to create a diversion
“When pressure mounted for answers, I told reporters that the office, having been unused, needed renovation because rats might have eaten some cables,” he recounted.
