The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has stepped down from his role in the cabinet of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. His resignation will take effect from April 30, 2026.
Politics Nigeria reports that the development was confirmed on Wednesday after the Presidency received his resignation letter. The letter was dated April 22, 2026.
It was formally addressed to the President and referenced FMP/HM/SGF/026/I/001.
In the letter, the minister stated that he decided to leave office to focus on his political ambition in Oyo State. He explained that the decision is tied to a long-standing goal.
He wrote that “to pursue his long-standing gubernatorial ambition in Oyo State.”
Adelabu traced his political journey back several years. He noted that his ambition to govern Oyo State dates as far back as 2016. He added that his earlier resignation as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2018 was part of that same political pursuit.
The former minister used the letter to thank President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve in his administration. He described his time in office as significant. He pointed to the importance of the power sector in driving Nigeria’s industrial growth and economic development.
He also stated that his exit is aimed at ensuring a smooth transition. According to him, stepping down now will allow proper handover of responsibilities within the ministry.
Adelabu’s resignation is expected to trigger political activities in Oyo State, as preparations ahead of the next governorship election begin to gather momentum. Political observers say his entry into the race could reshape alignments within the state.
His time as Minister of Power was marked by ongoing efforts to stabilise electricity supply. The sector has continued to face challenges, including generation shortfalls, transmission constraints, and distribution inefficiencies.
There is no official announcement yet on who will replace him. However, sources within government circles suggest that an interim arrangement may be put in place pending a substantive appointment.
Recall that Adelabu contested the Oyo State governorship election in the past but was unsuccessful. His renewed push is expected to bring fresh competition into the political space.
