Pursuant to its conviction that housing and infrastructure development are strategic tools for economic growth, poverty reduction, employment generation and improved living standards, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazak’s administration in Kwara state is set to deliver 1,600 housing units to the people of the state. 100 housing units will be built in each of the 16 local government areas of the state following a comprehensive assessment of housing needs and population growth across the state.
Major towns, including Lafiagi, Offa, Erin-Ile, Babaloma, Patigi, Kaiama and communities within Ilorin East, Ilorin South and Ilorin West, have been selected to host the housing estates. Additional housing would also be provided in locations where campuses of the Kwara State University are situated to address accommodation challenges.

According to the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Segun Ogunsola, the state government has acquired the 132-unit Ogbondoroko Federal Housing Estate from the Federal Government as part of efforts to reduce the housing shortage.
He further revealed that all preliminary activities had been completed for the construction of an additional 250 housing units, expected to commence within the current fiscal year.
The housing projects would not only provide decent accommodation for residents but also stimulate economic activities, create employment opportunities and enhance social development across the state.
The housing schemes primarily consist of two-bedroom and three-bedroom units, carefully designed to meet the needs of average family households across the state.
In view of the rising cost of building materials which is believed to be the greatest challenge confronting the housing sector, the AbdulRazaq administration has partnered with the Federal Government to facilitate the establishment of the North Central Building Materials Development Hub in Kwara state. The facility is expected to encourage local production of building materials, reduce dependence on imports and lower construction costs across the North-Central region.
Kwara Smart City to accommodate 540,000 residents
The Kwara Smart City, commenced by the state government is now at an advanced stage. The project, which has been described as one of the most ambitious urban development initiatives in the state’s history, was designed to position Kwara for future population growth and global urbanisation trends.
The Smart City, located about 25 kilometres from the Ilorin metropolis, would occupy 20,000 hectares of land and accommodate about 540,000 residents across 20 carefully planned districts.
The city has been designed as an integrated urban centre comprising residential, industrial, commercial, educational and recreational districts supported by modern infrastructure.
The city would feature smart transportation systems, renewable energy solutions, high-speed internet connectivity, efficient waste management facilities, smart security infrastructure and urban agricultural initiatives aimed at creating a sustainable and resilient city.
Work has already commenced on the project, with the construction of the proposed Kwara University of Education that would be accommodated in the city while 85 kilometres of roads had been cleared ahead of full-scale construction.

Several Federal Government institutions had also been allocated land within the Smart City, including projects under the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, to further strengthen public infrastructure and institutional presence within the new urban corridor.
