Ibrahim Traoré launches world-class $300m stadium, set to host first home match

 

Burkina Faso’s interim President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has unveiled a newly renovated $300 million stadium in the capital city, Ouagadougou, in a bold move to restore national pride and infrastructure.

The modernised August 4th Stadium, commissioned under the leadership of the interim President Ibrahim Traoré, is set to host the country’s first home football match in over three years.

The new facility boasts state-of-the-art features including digital scoreboards, VIP lounges, modern seating, an upgraded athletics track, refurbished gym, and world-class training centres.

The refurbishment was completed amid tight security and high public anticipation, with many citizens seeing it as a symbol of national pride and resilience in the face of political and security challenges.

Burkina Faso has been unable to host home matches since 2021 due to infrastructural decay and security concerns.

However, with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) officially reinstating the August 4th Stadium for international matches, Burkina Faso’s national team, the Stallions, is now set to return to home soil in the next international fixtures 

President Traoré’s administration has described the $300 million project as part of a broader strategy to boost national unity, invest in youth, and rebuild essential infrastructure.

Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo visited the stadium in May 2025 to assess its progress, stating that the facility had “exceeded expectations.”

The stadium now meets CAF and FIFA standards, and officials believe it could position Burkina Faso to host regional tournaments and expand its youth sports development initiatives.

The national team is scheduled to play its first official home match at the revamped stadium in September 2025.
